What diseases does it detect?

What is diagnosed by means of ultrasonography?

The ultrasound images offer real-time information about the structure of certain organs, their positioning, movement, as well  as possible dysfunctions of:

  • thyroid and parathyroid gland;
  • large blood vessels (the aorta, the renal arteries, the iliac arteries, the portal vein etc.);
  • lymphatic nodes;
  • the heart;
  • the mammary gland;
  • abdominal organs (liver, bile, spline, pancreas, kidneys, the urinary bladder);
  • pelvic organs (uterus, ovaries, prostate);
  • the eye socket and the eye ball;
  • soft tissues (tendons, muscles, joints);
  • testicles.

The sonogram is widely used during pregnancy, because it helps monitoring the intrauterine fetal development; also, the ultrasound helps determine the exact dimensions of the amniotic sac, the placenta, the length of the embryo, its movements, its heart rate and general condition of the mother-to-be.
