What diseases does it detect?
What is diagnosed by means of ultrasonography?
The ultrasound images offer real-time information about the structure of certain organs, their positioning, movement, as well as possible dysfunctions of:
- thyroid and parathyroid gland;
- large blood vessels (the aorta, the renal arteries, the iliac arteries, the portal vein etc.);
- lymphatic nodes;
- the heart;
- the mammary gland;
- abdominal organs (liver, bile, spline, pancreas, kidneys, the urinary bladder);
- pelvic organs (uterus, ovaries, prostate);
- the eye socket and the eye ball;
- soft tissues (tendons, muscles, joints);
- testicles.
The sonogram is widely used during pregnancy, because it helps monitoring the intrauterine fetal development; also, the ultrasound helps determine the exact dimensions of the amniotic sac, the placenta, the length of the embryo, its movements, its heart rate and general condition of the mother-to-be.
