The team at the MedLife Hospital for Orthopaedics and Plastic Surgery, coordinated by Prof. Dirk Uyttendaele, MD, performed a successful surgery to stabilize a very severe scoliosis in a patient of 14 years suffering from osteogenesis imperfecta, a rare disease that is characterized by extreme bones fragility.
The patient was implanted a support metal rod in order to stabilize the extremely severe scoliosis. The surgery was challenging also for the AIT team led by Mihaela Ganea, MD, who told us that the spinal deformity made the intubation very difficult. More, a simple tensiometer cuff positioning could have caused fractures. Thus, the tension was measured invasively, using a catheter inserted into an artery.
The surgery was successful.
