What does the examination consist of?

Mammography is performed with a special machine, called mammography unit, which presses the breast in order to obtain its clear and precise images. The doctor or the radiology technician will position your breast in the mammography unit on a special platform and compress it with a plastic paddle. This paddle will gradually compress the breast, thus the mammary tissue can be better visualized. In order to visualize the internal structure of the breast, two exposures for each breast are taken: one a top-to-bottom view and a side view at an angle.

The procedure is non-invasive and painless, but some patients may feel a certain mechanical discomfort in the breast under investigation.
