What does the CT scan consist of?

During the examination, the patient is seated on a flat surface (a special table) connected to a cylindrical scanner. The scanner sends X-Ray pulses to the examined part of the body, and the mobile tube of the machine rotates around the area under investigation sending signals to the computer. These signals are digitized and sent to an image processor which recreates the image based on measurements.

In some cases, the doctors recommend using a contrast medium in order to enhance the image of the organs under investigation: their structure, the presence of tumors and their detailed extension, infections, inflammations, traumatic lesions, vascularisation dysfunctions.

The contrast medium may be administered by various ways: oral, intravenous, endorectal, endovaginal.
